The Last Mile
Industry: Event Management, Traffic Management
Employees: 350+
Locations: Nationwide, UK
Background
The Last Mile started in 2014 as CarParkAt, specialising in event parking services. Over the last 10 years, the company has evolved into a consultancy and specialist operator of traffic, transport and pedestrian management services at events and venues. The company employs more than 350 people a year and provides services at over 150 events annually across the UK.
The Challenge
Most of the company's event-based staff are employed on a casual basis, which means that a typical per-user-pricing model for workforce management software would be financially unsuitable. The Last Mile’s Operations and Staffing Manager, Emma Taylor, told us that with their previously smaller team, this could have been viable, but with over 350 staff members, it would be "unnecessarily expensive”.
As the company caters for many different events and multiple venues, a regular weekly schedule will not provide sufficiently clear information or meet the needs of the business. Emma explained how the lack of this clear view always required manual verifications: “You just had to know what shifts were scheduled for each event and for which client and location.”
The Solution
With PARiM, The Last Mile has all of its temporary employees in one database with detailed information about positions and qualifications, ready to be scheduled without any extra cost per new employee. The filtering options provide an easy way to find the right employees quickly when needing to allocate shifts. This comes into play after shifts have been open for applications for two weeks, which offers a mixture of self-scheduling and shift allocation.
“We know exactly what shifts are related to each event, and I can see how far ahead we have them covered”
With PARiM’s Event Module, The Last Mile can easily overview shift coverage and requirements for each event and location. “We know exactly what shifts are related to each event, and I can see how far ahead we have them covered,” explained Emma. With so many temporary employees, there is also a need to keep track of their documentation. “We have a lot of employees on work or student visas. PARiM is really really useful for checking to see what's expiring in the next month or so,” Emma concluded.
